Fairbanks Ice Dogs’ nine-game win streak ends

FAIRBANKS — Call it coincidental and call it the end of a nine-game winning streak for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.rnrnThe Ice Dogs gave up four goals in the third period to the Kenai River Brown Bears and fell 4-2 to their intrastate rival in Saturday night’s opener of a North American Hockey League series in Soldotna.

Congratulations Mark Pustin – NAHL West Player of the Week

Fairbanks forward Mark Pustin connected for three goals and four assists as the Ice Dogs skated to a three-game sweep over Alaska. On Thursday, the Northridge, Calif., native recorded three assists, including one on Jared Larson’s game-winning goal, in a 6-2 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old tallied a goal as the Ice Dogs downed the Avalanche, 3-2. On Saturday, Pustin tallied two more goals and an assist in a 5-2 triumph. He was also a plus-4 for the weekend.

Fairbanks overcomes late mistake to knock off Avalanche

FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks Ice Dogs extended their winning streak to eight games by the slimmest of margins on Friday night before nearly 2,000 frenzied fans at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.rnrnAfter scoring the go-ahead goal with a little more than three minutes remaining, the Ice Dogs gave up the game-tying goal with less than a minute to play.rnrnA scoreless overtime period didn’t decide the winner, so the Ice Dogs won the five-player shootout 2-1 to claim a 3-2 victory over the Alaska Avalanche in a battle of North American Hockey League South division rivals.

FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks Ice Dogs got on a roll Thursday night and buried the Alaska Avalanche.rnrnZach Tolkinen and Jared Larson each registered two goals and an assist as the Ice Dogs pinned a five-spot on the board in the second period en route to a 6-2 North American Hockey League victory against their intrastate rivals from Wasilla.

Congratulations Michael Taffe – NAHL Goalie of the Week

Fairbanks goaltender Mike Taffe turned aside 63 of 69 shots as the Ice Dogs skated to a three-game sweep over Kenai River. On Friday, the Maple Grove, Minn., native made 20 saves in a 6-2 victory. The next night, the 18-year-old stopped 19 shots as the Ice Dogs doubled up the Brown Bears, 4-2. On Sunday, Taffe won his sixth game in a row after making 24 saves in regulation and overtime and five of six in the shootout in a 3-2 triumph.

FAIRBANKS — Two players who might not be familiar names to Ice Dogs fans contributed in a big way in Friday night’s 6-2 North American Hockey League victory against the Kenai River Brown Bears in Soldotna.rnrnNewcomer Aaron McGill, who was playing in just his fourth game, and Tyler Voigt each scored twice as the Ice Dogs won for the fourth straight time and gained ground on the second-place Alaska Avalanche, who suffered a 3-1 loss at league-leading Wenatchee.

Fairbanks forward James Saintey rang up three goals and two assists as the Ice Dogs skated to a two-game sweep over Kenai River. On Friday, the Rosemount, Minn., native potted two goals and an assist in a 5-2 victory. The next night, the 19-year-old scored another goal and an assist as the Ice Dogs doubled up the Brown Bears, 6-3. He was also a plus-5 on the weekend.
