Mar 13, 2019

FAIRBANKS- For the first time this season, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs find themselves entering a series as the top team in the North American Hockey League Midwest Division.  The Dogs host the Janesville Jets Thursday (7:00) Friday (7:30) and Saturday (7:30) at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

In addition to sweeping the Minnesota Magicians to take over the division lead, the Ice Dogs clinched a birth in post season play last weekend. The Jets split with the Kenai River Brown Bears and hold the final playoff spot in the Midwest Division.

The Ice Dogs will wear special St. Patrick’s Day jerseys throughout the weekend in honor of the holiday on Sunday.  The jerseys will be auctioned off during game intermissions, and limited edition replica hoodies will be available for sale only at the games.

Rookie Jonny Sorenson leads the Dogs with 46 points off 15 goals and 31 assists.  Jax Murray leads Fairbanks with 17 goals, and sits second with 39 points.  Three of the Dogs’ top five scorers are rookies, including Parker Brown (37 points) and Tanner Edwards (33 points).

Speaking of rookies, the Ice Dogs boast an outstanding pair of net minders in Nate Reid (.910) and Mattias Sholl (.928).  Sholl’s 1.87 goals against average leads the NAHL, while Reid ranks 8th with a 2.24 GAA. Reid is 16-11-0-2 in net this season, while Sholl is 11-1-3-1.

Tickets for this weekend’s games are available at Play it Again Sports, Gene’s Chrysler, Fairbanks Community Museum, Ft. Wainwright ASYMCA, Eielson Community Center, the Ice Dogs office, and as always online at fairbanksicedogs.com.
